Jeff Phillips: SIMS. [Poster]
Costa Mesa, CA: SIMS, c.1985. Color-illustrated poster (measures 18"x 22").
Original promotional poster for late legend Jeff Phillips’s pro skate deck produced by Santa Barbara-based company SIMS, featuring a color-saturated photo by Jim Goodrich. Established by Tim Sims in 1976, the skate and snowboard company partnered with fellow west coast skate-stitution Vision throughout the 80s. Phillips, famous for his towering height and vertical skateboarding style, was one of the first to team up with the brands to produce a signature deck. Born and raised in Dallas, Phillips officially went pro in '83 and was catapulted to skate fame a few years later when he beat the seemingly undefeatable Tony Hawk along with Mike McGill and Steve Caballero, all in the same tournament. Going on to become a six-time national champion and popularizing his own trick (the "Phillips 66"), he tragically committed suicide by gunshot in '93. A staff photographer for Skateboarder magazine during the Golden Age of skating, Goodrich began documenting the Costa Mesa scene after an injury on his own board led him to the hospital in '76. Pinholes to corners, approximately three-inch tear to bottom center, light creasing. Good. Item #9925
