On Christopher Street: Transgender Stories. Photographs by Mark Seliger

New York: Rizzoli, 2016. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in silver, neon yellow endpapers, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

"Christopher Street is a beacon for those who are questioning, seeking, and exploring self. A bright flame signaling safety and freedom from oppression" (from Janet Mock's foreword). Inscribed first edition of award-winning celebrity photographer Mark Seliger’s portrait series of the New York trans community. A longtime West Village resident, Seliger began his project as a means of capturing the vanishing LGBT community in the neighborhood. While he did not initially intend for the photo series to comprise only transgender people, he found that these were the subjects he was drawn to. Using one camera and one light source, he captured photos over the course of three summers. Comprises seventy-four of his black-and-white portraits alongside each subject’s personal story; with a foreword by trans activist and author Janet Mock. Inscribed by Seliger to the half-title: "For Eli, with love / and admiration / M. Seliger / 16." Corners gently bumped; unclipped dust jacket with minor rubbing to spine-ends. Near fine. Item #9519
