"The miracle of love has ended...that's the way it is, you are either madly in love or not at all." First US edition of Argentine author Manuel Puig’s debut novel. Embodying the transition from the Boom to the Post-Boom generation of Latin American writers, Puig is acclaimed for his visual and dialogic style, reflective of his career as a screenwriter and love of cinema. His most autobiographical novel, the story centers on a boy named Toto who escapes the boredom and oppression of his provincial town by fantasizing about Hollywood starlets. While not as openly queer as his breakout book Kiss of the Spider Woman, which depicted a love affair between two political prisoners, this bildungsroman is considered to mark a milestone in the Latin American queer canon. Translated by Puig’s biographer Suzanne Jill Levine. Originally published in Argentina in 1968. Unclipped dust jacket with minor rubbing and edgewear. Near fine. Item #9355
