Getting In. NYC Club Flyers from the Gay 1990s

New York: Daken Press, 2024. 2nd Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher's illustrated paper-covered boards, tangerine endpapers.

Second edition of journalist and Gay City News contributor David Kennerley’s monograph on 1990s New York queer club flyers, signed by him on the front free endpaper. Culled from his archive of over 1200 flyers that he collected from promoters, gay bars, club mailing lists, and more, this compendium showcases more than 230 flyers from venues including the Roxy, Sound Factory, Tunnel, Palladium, Copacabana, and Twilo, and parties like "Purgatory" and "Lick It!" Described by Kennerley in the Times as an act of "queer music history preservation," his visual history of the era obliquely historicizes the AIDS epidemic, the formation of ACT UP, and the development of alternative queer communities during Giuliani’s war on nightlife culture. Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white; with an introduction by legendary nightlife scene scribe Michael Musto and commentary by other luminaries and habitués of the era such as Lady Bunny, DJ Larry Tee, Susan Morabito, and Goldy Loxxx; with maps of nightspots and parties and club and LGBT history chronologies. Originally published in 2023. Fine. Item #9140
