Tennessee Williams in Tangier
Santa Barbara: Cadmus Editions, 1979. 1st Edition. 12mo, publisher’s stiff ivory paper wraps, tangerine endpapers, original illustrated attached dust jacket, original glassine dust jacket.
First edition of Moroccan writer Mohamed Choukri’s portrait of Tennessee Williams in Tangier, translated from the Arabic by longtime Tangier expat Paul Bowles. Choukri befriended Williams during the playwright’s return to the city in the summer of 1973, recording their conversations and encounters in his journal as they moved through cafés, houses, streets, and squares. Like Bowles, Burroughs, and Genet, Williams was drawn to the city’s cosmopolitan literary milieu, having first visited the city decades before. This account offers an intimate portrait alongside a record of Tangier in the early 1970s. With a foreword by novelist and screenwriter Gavin Lambert and a note by Williams; frontispiece portrait of Williams by J. Byrd Patterson. Published by Jeffrey Miller’s Cadmus Editions. Original glassine dust jacket with some soiling and edgewear. Near fine. Item #13507
