Marilyn

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1986. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's ecru binder's cloth, spine and upper board stamped in metallic teal, teal endpapers, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.

First edition of journalist and feminist activist Gloria Steinem’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe. The first biography of Monroe written by a woman, Steinem’s sensitive and vulnerable account avoids sensationalism or portraying Monroe as a "tragic figure." This is also the first appearance of photojournalist Barris’s series of portraits taken of Monroe two weeks before her death in 1962, making him the last photographer to shoot Marilyn Monroe. Known as the "Last Photos," this series of photographs, over 250 in all, were taken on the beach in Santa Monica and at a private home in the Hollywood Hills. Additionally illustrated with archival photos of a young Norma Jeane. First printing, with complete number row to copyright page. Small price sticker to lower panel of price-clipped dust jacket, with light rubbing and edgewear. Near fine. Item #13451
