New York fashion and street photographer Cunningham's only book, a collaboration with the "Duchess of Carnegie Hall" Editta Sherman. In 1968 Cunningham began scouting for vintage clothing, eventually collecting nearly 500 outfits dating from 1786 to 1976. He and Sherman then matched the period costumes with Manhattan's architectural landmarks, accessorizing the outfits with proper shoes, parasols, and sometimes even underwear. The project spanned eight years and over 1800 Manhattan locations, documenting nearly two centuries of fashion and architecture. Sherman poses in an 1889 two-piece silk taffeta and velvet suit in front of the American Museum of Natural History; clutches a turn of the century monkey-fur muff in front of the New York Public Library; models a 70s denim set and platform shoes to match the World Trade Center.
