Set among a drifting group of expats on a Mediterranean island, the story follows Alice Markham, a wealthy American grieving her dead son, whose attachment to a young man named Sheridan takes on increasingly complicated emotional dimensions. The book, particularly its setting, is based on the beginning of Dunphy’s decades-long relationship with Capote (to whom the book is dedicated), while they were living together in Sicily.
