Issue number 4 of pioneering lesbian feminist literary and art journal Sinister Wisdom, founded in Charlotte, North Carolina, by Catherine Nicholson and Harriet Desmoines in 1976. Inspired by earlier lesbian periodicals such as The Ladder and Amazon Quarterly, Nicholson and Desmoines conceived the journal at a lesbian writing workshop in Knoxville, Tennessee, subsequently circulating a leaflet soliciting writing for a new publication created by and for lesbians. Emerging from the lesbian-separatist movement of the 1970s, Sinister Wisdom provided lesbians with an independent forum for poetry, fiction, essays, criticism, visual art, political debate, and accounts of everyday life that were largely excluded from mainstream publishing. The longest-running lesbian feminist literary and art journal in the US, it remains an essential nonprofit resource, offering free subscriptions to women in prisons and psychiatric institutions.
