The Secret Integration
London: Aloes Books, 1980. 1st Edition Thus. Octavo, publisher's stapled illustrated stiff paper wraps.
First separate printing of this early Pynchon story (originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1964), one of 2500 unnumbered copies. Aloes Books was established by printer-publisher Jim Pennington in the early 70s, during the boom in alternative small presses and bookshops taking place in Britain at that time. Though Pynchon implies, in his introduction to Slow Learner, that the Aloes printings of his stories were unauthorized, Pennington has maintained that he secured permission from the proper rights-holders for all but one of the four Pynchon stories he would ultimately publish. Cover and frontispiece illustration by English artist and designer Jake Tilson. Minor toning to wraps. Near fine. Item #13251
