In part inspired by Mark Twain's cross-dressing satire A Medieval Romance and penned during the height of second-wave feminism, the story follows four genetically identical women, Jeannine, Joanna, Janet, and Jael, living in parallel universes. Upon meeting and interacting, they realize they must resort to violence in order to be free from a male-dominated society. The novel garnered a massive cult following and ultimately earned the reputation of a feminist masterwork. The cover art, rendered in the "Good Girl Art" (GGA) style of the era, is by artist and photographer Morgan Kane, best known for shooting the legs of model Joyce Bartle for the twelfth James Bond film For Your Eyes Only (1981).
