Summer 2008 issue of Studio Museum in Harlem’s magazine, this issue dedicated to Kehinde Wiley’s "World Stage" series. Founded in 1968 by a group of Black artists, educators, activists, and philanthropists, the Studio Museum was designed to provide a space to exhibit work unburdened by mainstream art world restrictions. Wiley is best-known for his portraits of young black men, whom he scouts on the street and poses in the manner of Renaissance master painters, fusing history and issues of race and cultural representation. Published in conjunction with his first solo exhibition at the museum, this issue presents ten paintings he created following his travels in Nigeria and Senegal alongside an exhibition introduction and an excerpt from Tavia Nyong’o’s catalog essay, "Africa Never Looks Back from the Place from Which We See It: Kehinde Wiley on the World Stage."
