His third published novel, the gothic ghost story centers on Jack Torrence, an alcoholic writer who is given the opportunity to become the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, and his telepathic young son. Often compared to short story "The Inn" by Maupassant, the story was largely inspired by King’s stay at the the Stanley Hotel in Colorado (in room 217, no less), along with his own struggles with alcoholism. The book is at times eclipsed by Stanley Kubrick’s renowned 1980 film adaptation starring Jack Nicholsona and Shelley Duvall, which King famously took umbrage with, claiming it had "no heart."
