Vintage black-and-white press photo of Marlon Brando as gambler Sky Masterson in Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1955 musical comedy Guys and Dolls. Fresh from his Academy Award-winning performance in On the Waterfront (1954), Brando was an unexpected choice for the musical role, having no previous reputation as a singer. He nevertheless performed his own vocals, including the film’s celebrated rendition of "Luck Be a Lady" which he's seen prepping for here with Makiewicz. His casting opposite Frank Sinatra, who reportedly wanted to play Sky, contributed to the production’s famously tense atmosphere. Caption in blue ink stamped to verso. Catalog #SG-7400-C79.
