First edition of this catalog for a solo exhibition dedicated to Malian photographer Malick Sidibé, held at the Maramotti Collection as part of the fifth edition of Fotografia Europea. Gathering mostly unpublished photographs taken in Bamako during the 1960s and 70s, the exhibition and accompanying volume move between two poles of Sidibé's practice: the euphoric nightlife of dancers and partygoers captured in the early years of Malian independence, and the formal studio portraits made at his studio, whose reconstruction anchored the exhibition, with the photographer himself present to shoot visitors on opening days. Born into a peasant family in the 1930s, Sidibé and his knack for photography were noticed by his school teachers early on, leading to an apprenticeship with leading society photographer Gérard Guillat-Guignard. Garnering global recognition for his nightclub photos and portraits, he was the first photographer and first African awarded the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2007.
