The Basketball Diaries and The Book of Nods

London: Faber and Faber, 1987. 1st Edition Thus. 12mo, publisher’s stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.

"It was a dream, not a nightmare, a beautiful dream I could never imagine in a thousand nods." Signed UK edition of American writer and punk rocker Jim Carroll’s cult classic memoir, published here with prose written over the following decade. The Basketball Diaries was originally serialized in the Paris Review and details Carroll’s heroin addiction as a basketball star at an elite Manhattan private school in the 1960s through diary entries he wrote from ages 12 to 15. First published in book form in 1978, the book granted Carroll widespread acclaim and was praised by the likes of Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, establishing his reputation as a mainstream literary talent. In 1980, the book was reissued for the mass market, propelling it to widespread popularity, particularly on college campuses. In 1995, a film adaptation was released featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jim Carroll and Mark Wahlberg as his friend Mickey. Signed by Carroll to front endpaper. Light shelfwear, else fine.
