First edition of Italian photographer Ugo Mulas's visual chronicle of New York's 1960s avant-garde art scene. After documenting Robert Rauschenberg taking the grand prize for painting at the Venice Biennale in 1964 (the first American to win the award), Mulas came to New York, only recently anointed the center of the global art world. He captured the era's most prominent Pop, Minimalist, and Abstract Expressionist artists in their studios and around the city, with subjects including Rauschenberg, Barnett Newman, Lee Bontecou, John Chamberlain, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and others. Illustrated with over five-hundred black-and-white gravure plates; with an essay and biographical entries for each artist by critic Alan Solomon. Book designed by Michele Provinciali. Some soiling to board edges, light dampstaining to bottom edge of lower board and last few leaves; unclipped dust jacket with some toning, soiling, edgewear, and few closed tears.
