Just Kids. Illustrated Edition

New York: Ecco, 2018. 1st Edition. Small thick quarto, publisher's purple paper-covered boards, spine and upper board stamped in white, black-and-white photo label mounted to upper board, lower board illustrated, black endpapers.

Signed first illustrated edition of singer, artist, and poet Smith's memoir of her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and late 1960s and 70s New York, with a new introduction. Smith chronicles in a candid yet lyrical style her and Mapplethorpe's friendship, from the making of her 1975 hit album Horses to his artistic career and eventual death from AIDS in 1989, with cameos by Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix and Allen Ginsberg. On his deathbed, Smith promised to write about their younger years, before either found fame or fortune. Of this memoir, she says simply, "I wrote it because Robert asked me to" (Classic Rock). Extensively illustrated with color and black-and-white drawings and ephemera, along with dozens of photos by Mapplethorpe, Judy Linn, Kate Simon, Lynn Davis, Harry Smith, and more. Originally published in an unillustrated edition in 2010. Signed by Smith on the title page. No dust jacket, as issued. Minor rubbing to boards and corners. Near fine. Item #13109
