Revised and updated second edition, presentation copy, of internationally renowned photographer Peter Beard's landmark work on Africas wildlife crisis, inscribed by Beard and with a small original drawing. Unorthodox in style and layout, Beard's amalgam of history and travelogue is a poignant testimony to the damage done by human intervention in Africa. Beard went to Africa to film and write about the flora and fauna on author Isak Dinesen's farm acreage. Witnessing the dawn of Kenya's population explosion of the early 1960s, Beard began to chronicle the shocking aftermath. This led to over 20 years of documentation and compilation, of Beards own photography highlighting the starvation of tens of thousands of elephants, rhinos, and hippos in Kenya's Tsavo lowlands and Uganda parklands, along with first-hand written accounts and various ephemera such as multi-layered contact sheets, found objects, and newspaper clippings. Originally published in 1965. Beard has inscribed this copy in green marker to the half-title, and appended a small drawing and an additional note, to celebrity stylist and beauty industry pioneer Maury Hopson. Hopson made his break in the 1960s working for the renowned Mr. Kenneth (Kenneth Battelle), considered the first celebrity hair dresser. He left the salon to become a freelance stylist in 1965, embarking on what would become a multi-decade career, working with major celebrities and fashion icons including Elizabeth Taylor, Sigourney Weaver, and Cheryl Tiegs, to whom Beard was briefly married. The inscription reads, in part: "To Maury (in 'ecology-green') on his B-day en route to 'the Stones'...as ever Salaams, Peter B."
