Monograph published in conjunction with an exhibition of Alice Neel’s paintings and works on paper held at David Zwirner’s New York gallery in 2017. Curated by Pulitzer-winning writer and critic Hilton Als, the project focused on portraits of Black, Latino, and Asian individuals she painted over the course of fifty years while living in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side. Highlighting the ways in which Neel immortalized underserved communities through what Als designates as "generosity behind her seeing," the exhibition presented depictions of prominent figures such as painter Faith Ringgold, sociologist Horace R. Cayton, Jr., academic Harold Cruse, and playwright Alice Childress, alongside everyday people and local children.
