Program published in conjunction with the Performing Arts Company of the People's Republic of China's debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House in 1978. Demonstrative of the crystallizing diplomatic relations between the US and PRC prompted by President Nixon's visit to China in 1972, the historic tour made its debut in New York before traveling to DC, Minneapolis, Berkeley, and Los Angeles. Highly notable for rehabilitating Chinese artists who had been subjected to forced agricultural labor during the Maoist Era, such as premier ballerina Pai Shu-hsiang, the performance featured Peking opera excerpts, folk dances, state-sanctioned ballet, and vocal and instrumental solos from classical Chinese musical arrangements.
