Quay Brothers. On Deciphering the Pharmacist’s Prescription for Lip-Reading Puppets
New York: Museum of Modern Art, 2012. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher’s stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps, french flaps.
Catalog published in conjunction with the first major retrospective of work by the Quay Brothers held at the Museum of Modern Art in 2012. Revered for their meticulously crafted and psychologically dense output, identical twin brothers Stephen and Timothy Quay work across across stop-motion animation, live-action film, graphic design, and stage production. Curated by Ron Magliozzi, the exhibition presented their films, puppets, drawings, graphic works, installations, and stage designs in conjunction with an exhibition of their shorts, dance films, documentaries, music videos, commercial spots, and features at the Celeste Bartos Theater. This accompanying catalog includes documentation of their lesser known moving image pieces, works on paper including graphic design, drawings, typography, and notebooks for films alongside essays by Magliozzi and Edwin Carels, and two new projects in the form of text and images that provide insight into their working process.
