Tableaux et Dessins/Paintings and Drawings

Paris: Musée des Arts Décoratifs, 1974. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff illustrated paper wraps.

"Paris has been painted by so many people. By very talented artists, much greater than I am…I want to take up the challenge, because it's worth the trouble and I like to make life difficult for myself." Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of work by British pop artist David Hockney held at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1974. The show presented drawings and paintings Hockney created upon his move to the city in 1973 in pursuit of inspiration away from the London scene. In an interview with Pierre Restany recorded here, Hockney discusses feeling liberated from the "curse of modernism," producing work that depicts the world "as he saw it." His transition to a simple yet bold naturalism was manifest at the exhibition. Illustrated in black-and-white, with some plates in color; with an introduction by Stephen Spender. Text in French and English. Light edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #13000
