Paper Pools. Edited by Nikos Stangos

New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, 1980. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff illustrated paper wraps.

Monograph on British pop artist Hockney's series of 29 vibrant "pressed color paper pulp pictures" of swimming pools, his first to make use of this medium, involving the molding of dyed, hand-made paper into large-scale collages. "I love new mediums and this was something I had never seen or used before. I think mediums can turn you on, they can excite you: they always let you do something in a different way, even if you take the same subject, if you draw it in a different way, or if you are forced to simplify it, to make it bold because it is too finicky. I like that" (from the introduction, "Making Paper Pools"). Illustrated with 122 color plates, drawings, and black-and-white photos of Hockney at work in the workshop of Tyler Graphics Ltd. in Mt. Kisco, NY, where the pictures were made. Edited, and with a preface by renowned artbook publisher Nikos Stangos. Published simultaneously in hardcover and paperback (as here). Light toning and some edgewear to wraps. Very good. Item #12999
