Cut with the Kitchen Knife. The Weimar Photomontages of Hannah Höch

New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1993. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in orange, black endpapers, original illustrated dust jacket.

First edition monograph on prolific avant-garde German artist Hannah Höch’s photomontages, by art critic Maud Lavin. Höch innovated her hallmark practice with her partner Raoul Hausmann during the blossoming postwar Dadaist movement. The first study on Höch written in English, Lavin's monograph focuses on her later works, from her mass media scrapbook "Album" (1916-34) and her series "Ethnographic Museum "(1924-30), appraising them as a feminist critique of the social construction of womanhood. Illustrated with black-and-white plates, photos, and reproductions (some in color); with endnotes, bibliography, and index. First printing with complete number row to copyright page. Unclipped dust jacket with riginal price sticker to lower flap and some dampstaining to verso. Very good. Item #12986
