May-June 1982 issue of Frederick S. Clarke’s American horror, fantasy, and scifi film magazine, this issue focusing on Paul Schrader's "horror chic," Cat People. Established by Clarke in 1967 as a mimeographed fanzine, Cinefantastique was relaunched in 1970 as a glossy quarterly. Clarke, then an undergrad, conceived of the magazine as a critical alternative to more fan-oriented "monster magazines," emphasizing production histories, interviews, reviews, and a scholarly approach to genre cinema. This issue pairs a retrospective on the 1942 Val Lewton/Jacques Tourneur classic with coverage of Schrader’s remake, along with an interview with Nicholas Meyer (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn), features on Tron and The Thing, reviews of contemporary fantasy and horror films, and more.
