Malcolm
New York: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1987. Reprint Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
Presentation copy of fabulist and humorist James Purdy’s first full-length novel, inscribed by him to composer Christopher Berg. A surreal study of innocence and corruption, the narrative revolves around a beautiful young man whose search for his absent father leads him into the orbit of a series of decadent and manipulative adults. Praised by such diverse writers as Edward Albee, Paul and Jane Bowles, and Jonathan Franzen (who considers Purdy "one of the most undervalued and underread writers in America"), Purdy gained a wide readership toward the end of his life and career. First printing of this reprint edition (originally published in 1959). Signed by Purdy to the half-title, and inscribed by him to the title page: "For Christopher Berg / with all kindest wishes / James" and signed again beneath his printed name. Light soiling and edgewear. Very good. Item #12962
