The Autobiography of Malcolm X
New York: Grove Press, Inc., 1965. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's black cloth, spine stamped in bronze, original photo-illustrated dust jacket.
"So early in my life, I had learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise." First edition of Black revolutionary Malcolm X’s posthumously published memoir. Published nine months after his death, the first-person account is primarily a spiritual conversion narrative, detailing X’s life from his traumatic upbringing, through his time drug dealing and pimping, to his time spent in prison, his spiritual transformation and political radicalization under the influence of the Nation of Islam, and his years as an activist and public figure. Although journalist Alex Haley was credited as co-author, he is considered to have written the entirety of the narrative, employing more than fifty interviews he conducted with X between 1963 and '65. Illustrated with several black-and-white photos. Dust jacket designed by Roy Kuhlman. Stated first printing to copyright page. Spine slightly rolled, light embrowning to endpapers from binder's glue; price-clipped dust jacket with some chipping to head of spine and top edge, sunning to spine panel, and moderate soiling and edgewear. Good. Item #12948
