Patti Smith. [Signed Vintage Photo]
New York: [David Godlis], 1976. Vintage black-and-white photographic print (measures 6.75" x 10").
Vintage black-and-white photograph of punk-poet laureate Patti Smith, captured and signed by early punk scene documentarian David Godlis, known by his last name. Inspired by Arbus, Winogrand, Weegee, and most prominently Brassaï and his use of natural light, Godlis began to work as a street photographer in the early 1970s. He chronicled the emerging punk movement in real time, taking photos of Blondie, the Ramones, Richard Hell, Talking Heads, Television, and this iconic image of Smith at the corner of Bleecker Street and Bowery, outside punk scene epicenter CBGB, perhaps his best known photograph. Signed and captioned by Godlis in black marker to the bottom margin with his studio stamp to the verso. Strip of cellotape residue to top margin of verso, else fine. Item #12944
