Bamboo Girl. Issue #5
New York: Bamboo Girl, 1996. Small quarto, publisher’s stapled stiff illustrated paper wraps.
Issue #5 (and the first anniversary issue) of Sabrina Alcantara-Tan’s influential Asian-American feminist punk zine published during the mid-1990s riot grrrl zine movement. Written from a "Filipina/Asian Pacific Islander/Asian mutt feminist point of view," Bamboo Girl employs personal writing, collage, interviews, music criticism, and graphics to address racism, sexism, homophobia, mixed race identity, punk culture, beauty standards, and Filipino American womanhood. The zine became one of the better known titles by women of color amid the riot grrrl moment, alongside titles such as Slant, Evolution of a Race Riot, and Chop Suey Spex. This issue contains interviews with Clit Club founder Julie Tolentino, queercore band member Aloofah (Iraya Robles), and pioneering Japanese all-women experimental rock band Super Junky Monkey. Illustrated with black-and-white with photos, drawings, and reproductions. Price sticker to upper wrap. Light rubbing to wraps. Near fine. Item #12924
