San Diego: P.E.C. Inc., 1967. 1st Edition. 12mo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
Pre-Stonewall gay pulp paperback by Mississippi-born beefcake illustrator Carl Corley, centering on a "young female impersonator" named Dewy Bow. A product of the "gay pulp boom," the book is an example of the great gains in literary freedom of expression made by American publishers after a series of federal court decisions made between the mid-1950s to 70s. Like many gay works of the times, the prose elides explicit content with innuendo and double-entendre. Corley often chose to focus on rural protagonists in southern settings, boldly publishing his semi-autobiographical works under his real name and illustrating the covers himself, making him an outlier representing not only gay pulp, but southern gay pulp. His non-erotic work includes Louisiana history and illustrated religious books. Issued as FL17 in the publisher's French Line series. Some rubbing and soiling to wraps. Very good. Item #12918
