i-D. No. 51. September 1987
London: i-D Magazine, 1987. Quarto, publisher's photo-illustrated paper wraps.
September 1987 issue of the "original fashion and style bible" i-D, with Rachel Weisz (credited as Rachel Wise) shot by Kevin Davies on the cover. Founded by British Vogue art director Terry Jones – along with his wife Tricia, and Perry Haines – as a magazine that took street style seriously, "It was about the idea that you could do it yourself rather than have a fashion magazine dictate what you could wear. It was the time when post-punk, club life, and the music scene were all coming together. It was about DIY self-expression" (from a 2016 interview with W magazine). From its launch in 1980 to 1985 Terry and Tricia produced the magazine from the top floor of their West Hampstead home, growing the magazine from hand-stapled photocopies with small distribution to a full-color fashion magazine with proper ads. It has since become a major influence on the fashion industry, helping nurture the careers of iconic photographers (such as Nick Knight, Juergen Teller and Wolfgang Tillmans) and giving budding stars Madonna, Sade, and Björk their earliest cover shots. In addition to the iconic cover shot, this issue includes a feature on twenty years of Fiorucci, a profile on Curtis Mayfield, four seasons of calendar girls, an editorial on London menswear, and more. Light edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #12916
