POPism. The Warhol '60s
New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher's black cloth over black paper-covered boards, spine stamped in metallic turquoise, original illustrated dust jacket.
"[W]e were the art incarnate and the 1960s were really about people, not what they did." Double-signed first edition of Warhol’s sensational 1980 memoir, co-authored with his friend and frequent collaborator Pat Hackett. The year by year account provides Warhol's perspective on the pervasive Pop Art phenomenon in New York during the 1960s. A sensation upon publication, Popism includes anecdotes of his Superstars, celebrities, and Factory regulars such as Edie Sedgwick, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Nico, Allen Ginsberg, Jonas Mekas, and Candy Darling, chronicles his early career and experiences with screen printing, and describes his first solo shows. Illustrated in black-and-white with photos of Warhol and others at the Factory. Stated first edition, with B the highest letter in letter row on copyright page, indicating first printing per the publisher's custom. Signed twice by Warhol in black marker, once to upper panel of dust jacket (first name only), and again to front endpaper (full name). Some embrowning to endpapers from binder's glue; unclipped dust jacket with shallow chipping to head of spine, and light sunning to spine panel. Very good. Item #12912
