Bucharest: Muzeul de Arta al Republicii Socialiste Romania, 1972. 1st Edition. Folio, publisher's beige buckram cloth, spine and upper board stamped in brown, upper board blindstamped, illustrated endpapers.

Monograph published in conjunction with a landmark retrospective on the great Romanian sculptor held at the Museum of Art of the Socialist Republic of Romania (now the National Museum of Art of Romania) in Bucharest in 1972. A major milestone during Nicolae Ceau escu’s dictatorship, the exhibition was made possible by the state's appropriation of Brancusi’s legacy after the country had previously rejected the donation of his entire Paris studio shortly before his death. As the communist regime shifted in the 1960s and 70s, the government reclaimed Brancusi as a quintessential Romanian figure in its attempt to present an aura of cultural openness to the West. Illustrated with color and black-and-white plates. Text in Romanian, French, and English. No dust jacket as issued. Fine. Item #12899
