Womanizer
New York: Deitch Projects, 2007. 1st Edition. Slim folio, publisher's stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps, illustrated endpapers.
Catalog published in conjunction with a group exhibition curated by New York multihyphenate Kembra Pfahler and performance artist Julie Atlas Muz at Deitch Projects, in 2007. Dubbed the "godmother of modern day shock art," Pfahler is known for her "monstrous" fetishistic femininity that adopts components of Japanese Noh and Kabuki theater, and for her theatrical deathrock band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. "Womanizer" featured work by Pfahler, Maz, sculptress E.V. Day, Artist Entity Breyer P-Orridge (composed of Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge and Genesis Breyer P-Orridge), genderqueer art icon Vaginal Davis, and performance artist Bambi the Mermaid. The catalog cover features a collage of Pfahler in a meat grinder, a reappropriation of Larry Flynt’s most notorious Hustler cover. (In an interview with Climax Books, Pfahler says the image represents "what misogyny and most of my relationships to the art business were all about.") The endpapers are decorated with the “logos” of the participants, such as Pfahler’s “bat woman with boobs,” P-Orridge’s “double headed mummy,” and Bambi’s mermaid. Illustrated with color photos and reproductions; endpapers decorated with the participants' logos, including Pfahler’s "bat woman with boobs," P-Orridge’s "double headed mummy," and Bambi’s mermaid; with artist statements and an exhibition checklist. Original invitation laid in. Original price sticker to lower wrap. Light rubbing and edgewear. Very good. Item #12839
