Beautalism
New York: Deitch Projects, 2008. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.
Catalog published in conjunction with an exhibition of New York multihyphenate Kembra Pfahler’s "butt prints" at Deitch Projects, and her installation at the Whitney Biennial, in 2008. Dubbed the "godmother of modern day shock art," Pfahler is known for her "monstrous" fetishistic femininity that adopts components of Japanese Noh and Kabuki theater. Upon her move to New York in 1979 she became involved in the Lower East Side music, performance, art and film scene. In 1990, she formed the theatrical deathrock band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black with Samoa Moriki. Their performances remain legendary, with the band members sporting full body paint, bouffant wigs, and blackened teeth. This catalog highlights Pfahler's "Sit-Ins," her Biennial installation, performance work, and more. Illustrated in color; with text by Pfahler and art dealer Kathy Grayson (who co-edited and designed the book). Minor edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #12838
