[Autograph Note Signed from Marlene Dietrich]
Beverly Hills, CA: Russell Birdwell and Associates, 1942. 2 signed notes stapled at top left (each measuring 8 1/2" x 5 1/2").
Autograph note signed from German-American Hollywood actress and cultural icon Marlene Dietrich to composer and film producer Arthur Schwartz, with a typed note signed from publicist Russell Birdwell. A flamboyant press agent known for successfully manufacturing attention around Hollywood stars and films, Birdwell played an integral role in the publicity machinery surrounding Dietrich, especially during her David O. Selznick period. The note from Birdwell, dated May 11, 1942, reads: "Gordon Clifford [American lyricist] asked me to send you the attached note in Marlene Dietrich’s handwriting for use in connection with the promotion of her latest song," with Dietrich’s note, stapled underneath, reading: "Dear Friend – / I hope you like this, my latest song from my latest picture / Sincerely Marlene Dietrich." The song in question is likely "I Find Love," written by Clifford and Jack King, from her 1942 film The Lady Is Willing. Schwartz, the recipient, is best known for his partnership with lyricist Howard Dietz on songs such as "Dancing in the Dark," and for material for Vincente Minelli’s 1953 musical comedy The Band Wagon. Light creasing and soiling, and tears to binder holes at top edge of both notes, pencil notation to Birdwell note, trace of paperclip rust to top left corner of Dietrich note. Very good. Item #12831
