Vanity Fair. October 1992. Volume 55, Number 10

New York: Condé Nast Publications, Inc., 1992. Quarto, publisher's photo-illustrated self-wraps.

October 1992 issue of Graydon Carter-era Vanity Fair with Madonna on the cover, photographed by Steven Meisel. Dating to the 19th century, Vanity Fair (named after William Thackeray's sprawling novel) was purchased by publishing titan Condé Nast in 1913. The magazine reported on major moments in American culture while publishing prominent authors, artists, and illustrators throughout the Jazz age, such as Picasso, Dorothy Parker, Man Ray, and Cecil Beaton. Devastated by the Great Depression, it suspended publication in 1936. Almost five decades later, editors Richard Locke and Leo Lerman revived Vanity Fair before passing the torch to Tina Brown in 1984. After her decade at the glossy, Time and Life veteran Graydon Carter took the helm. Carter continued in Brown's footsteps to elevate Vanity Fair with A-list celebrity covers and commentary on political and international affairs. In addition to the Madonna cover story, promoting the release of Madonna and Meisel's just-published collab Sex, this issue also features pieces on Larry Kramer, Vanessa Paradis (photographed by Ellen von Unwerth), Queen Elizabeth II, the early Brad Pitt vehicle A River Runs Through It, and more. Illustrated throughout with color and black-and-white photos. Minor creasing to wraps, else fine. Item #12823
