SoHo. A Guide. A Documentary.

New York: Egret Publications, Inc., 1986. 1st Edition. Quarto, publisher's stiff illustrated paper wraps.

Mid-1980s guide to the Soho art, fashion, dining, shopping, and nightlife scene edited by Vienna-born journalist Roland Hagenberg, the copy of photographer Marcia Resnick. One of the first publications on the gallery scene and one of two "yearbooks" created by Hagenberg (the first on the East Village issued in 1985), this compendium comprises profiles on artists Richard Hambleton, Jenny Holzer, Tom Wesselman, Eric Fischl and others, articles on style and nightlife, a gallery index, and lists of museums and bookstores. This copy bears a full-page gift inscription in black marker to the first page: "To Marcia," with fragmentary text and graffiti style drawings, that appear to be signed by "Vee," whom we're unable to identify. Additionally, car artist Stephen "Hoop" Hooper has signed an entry about him on p. 144. Born in Brooklyn, Marcia Resnick is best known for chronicling the downtown scene of the 1970s and 80s in real time, taking portraits of musicians, artists, filmmakers, and writers such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Belushi, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol, and Susan Sontag, and for her regular feature in the SoHo Weekly News, "Resnick’s Believe-It-or-Not." Cover designed by painter Robert Kushner. Illustrated with black-and-white photos, drawings, reproductions, and tons of ads. A time capsule from a bygone era. Light sunning to spine, light edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #12807
