Providence, RI: Matrix, 1982. 1st Edition. Oblong octavo, publisher's black-and-white printed stiff paper wraps, french flaps.

Photographers Sy Rubin and Larry Siegels's intimate portrait of New York City's 14th Street, considered the border separating downtown from the rest of Manhattan. Eschewing a straightforward depiction of the street itself, the black-and-white photos focus heavily on personal style, interpersonal relationships, ephemera, and signage. The diversity and specificity come together to form a loving portrait and important historical document. "Fourteenth Street seems at first just a messy strip, an urban version of a fast-food highway, but in its fourteen block-long expanse it in fact embraces much more – indeed, it takes in much of what the city is about" (from the introduction by architecture critic Goldberger). Published under the auspices of the Emanu-El Midtown YM-YWHA, and as part of a series of more than 70 projects documenting American cities funded by the National Education Association from 1976 to 1981. With caption and credits. Fine. Item #12806
