Boyfriends: Savage Lust. Vol.1, Issue 1
New York: D.U.O. Communications, Inc., 1977. 12-page zine, publisher's black-and-white and red illustrated sheets stapled at top left corner (measures 12 1/4" x 8 1/2").
Fan zine created for the short-lived, "criminally underrated" New York-based punk band. The Boyfriends were formed in 1977 by power pop pioneers Bobby Dee Waxman and Paddy Lorenzo, after leaving the Merseybeat-inspired Poppees (1973-76). Waxman and Williams linked up with Jay Nap and Lee Crystal (bass and drums respectively) to officially form the band. Their first single "I Don't Want Nobody (I Want You)” was put out in '78 on Greg Shaw’s Bomp! label (the band had a brief flirtation with pop impresario Malcolm McLaren). They continued to play independently until parting ways in '81, though not before opening for the Ramones at CBGB. Shortly after the breakup, Johnny Ramone contacted Waxman to ask if his band could record the Boyfriends single "I Need Your Love" for their seventh studio album Subterranean Jungle (misattributed as a Ramones original). Produced around the time of the band’s formation, by friends Max McCarry and Michael Smithe, who had just founded their own management company D.U.O. (Do Unto Others), this zine comprises black-and-white photos and collages of the band pursued by a pack of female fans, with photos by Gary Green, Michael Alago, and Stuart Chernoff. While the zine bears no ownership markings, it comes from the collection of photographer Marcia Resnick. Born in Brooklyn, Resnick is best known for chronicling the downtown scene of the 1970s and 80s in real time, taking portraits of musicians, artists, filmmakers, and writers such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Belushi, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol, and Susan Sontag, and for her regular feature in the SoHo Weekly News, "Resnick’s Believe-It-or-Not." Some toning and edgewear, particularly to last leaf, horizontal crease from having been folded. Very good. Rare, with only one copy located, in the Geoffrey Weiss Punk Collection at Cornell University. Item #12802
