Kulchur 9
New York: Kulchur Press Inc., 1963. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
1963 issue of Kulchur, the avant-garde little mag published between 1961 and 1965. Only lasting 20 issues, the publication was inspired by and named after Ezra Pound’s Guide to Kulchur (1938), a wide-ranging collection of essays elucidating his iconoclastic aesthetic and philosophical concerns. Unlike other little magazines of the era, it included commentary and criticism on art, poetry, film, books, and records along with original poetry and prose by contemporary writers, many associated with what would become the New York School. In the early years of the magazine it was edited by Marc Schleifer, followed by Gilbert Sorrentino and Jerome Rothenberg, and then Lita Hornick, who was also the publisher and the financier for most of the magazine’s life. Hornick ultimately transformed Kulchur from periodical to "arts funder and grant-giving agency as well as a publishing venture.” This issue is guest edited by Joseph LeSueur and includes contributions by Ruth Krauss, Leroi Jones, Barbara Guest, Diane DiPrima, Frank O’Hara, Gilbert Sorrentino, Bill Bergson, and more, with a cover by Larry Rivers. Some wear to wraps, front cover over-opened. Very good. Item #12797
