Asphalt Gardens. 69 Photographs by Flo Fox
Washington, DC: National Access Center, 1981. 1st Edition. Oblong quarto, publisher’s stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps.
First edition, presentation copy, of late American street photographer Flo Fox’s debut book, inscribed to fellow photographer Marcia Resnick. Fox began visually documenting the New York streets in the early 1970s, later continuing her practice after losing vision and mobility, working with assistants, autofocus cameras, and adaptive tools following her diagnosis with multiple sclerosis. An advocate for the disabled, she taught one of the first photography classes for the blind at Lighthouse International in 1979 and sustained a career documenting urban life despite becoming fully paralyzed by 1999. Inscribed by Fox to verso of upper wrap: "#1000! / Dear Marcia, / I repeat: Even though we met on a lark, I’m glad we remain friends. I love your work! / Love, Flo." Born in Brooklyn, Resnick is best known for chronicling the downtown scene of the 1970s and 80s in real time, taking portraits of musicians, artists, filmmakers, and writers such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Belushi, Iggy Pop, Andy Warhol, and Susan Sontag, and for her regular feature in the SoHo Weekly News, "Resnick’s Believe-It-or-Not." Illustrated with black-and-white plates; with a foreword by National Access Center director Larry Molloy, a poem by Fox, and an afterword by photographer Lief Ericksenn. One of 1000 copies. Moderate creasing and edgewear to wraps. Very good. Item #12781
