Crawl Out Your Window
San Diego: UCSD Communications Board, 1975. Quarto, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
First issue of the University of California San Diego’s student-run literary journal, with contributions from a loose West Coast avant-garde circle including Kathy Acker ("The Black Tarantula"), Eleanor and David Antin, Martha Rosler, and Melvyn Freilicher. Co-edited by American novelist and filmmaker Rex Pickett (Sideways) and fellow student Charles Heimler, this issue assembles poems, performance texts, and essays that straddle conceptual writing, feminist critique, and countercultural politics. Soon after the inaugural issue, Freilicher severed the magazine’s ties to the university, after which it circulated as a local experimental prose publication for the next fifteen years. The magazine is most noted for regular contributions by Acker, who studied at UCSD under the tutelage of the Antins and Jerome Rothenberg. This issue includes "I Dreamt I Became A Nymphomaniac!: Imagining," an excerpt from her serialized novel of the same name. Some toning and soiling to wraps, and staining to fore-edge of textblock. Very good. Item #12776
