Cherry Valley, NY: Cherry Valley Editions, 1979. 1st Edition. Octavo, publisher’s stiff illustrated paper wraps.
First edition chapbook of a long poem by leading American surrealist poet Charles Henri Ford. Penned late in Ford’s caree, after his involvement with the New York avant-garde scene and European surrealism, the poem is structured in thirty-nine disjointed stanzas with an epilogue of five elegies, forming a Joycean collage of shifting voices and dreamlike imagery, with references to figures such as Max Ernst, Saint-John Perse, and Candy Darling. Published by Charles Plymell’s imprint Cherry Valley Editions established by Plymell and his wife Pam (daughter of cut-up technique practitioner Mary Beach) after the couple moved to Allen Ginsberg’s retreat in the upstate New York village where he hosted friends and writers. With a chronology and black-and-white photo of Ford. Issued simultaneously in a signed limited hardcover edition. Occasional marginal pencil notations. Some toning and edgewear to wraps. Very good.
