Night. May 1980. Volume 3, Number 3
New York: Anton Perich Productions Inc., 1980. Oversized tabloid, publisher's black-and-white newsprint (measures 17" x 22.5").
May 1980 issue of filmmaker and photographer Anton Perich’s seminal nightlife magazine, featuring model Jenny Wright photographed by Antonio Lopez on the cover. Perich began photographing NYC nightlife in the early 1970s, documenting the scenes at Andy Warhol's Factory, the Chelsea Hotel, Max’s Kansas City, and Mudd Club. Inspired by Warhol’s Interview (where he was a regular contributor), Perich founded NIGHT in 1978 as a vehicle for his transcendent paparazzo photos of revelers at Studio 54, Xenon, and the other reigning clubs of the day. The oversized tabloid featured photo-collages and dramatic full-page spreads alongside hot takes, poetry, interviews with artists, actors, filmmakers, fashion designers, models, and more. Perich abandoned the project in late 1980 to work full-time as a painter upstate, but has intermittently revived the magazine, with its last installment dating from 2011. This issue contains interviews with Helmut Lang, Oscar de la Renta, and Kenneth Anger, a profile on actress and cover girl Jenny Wright, photo spreads "presented by" Nuyorican fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, a frequent contributor, photos of a party at Fiorucci, and more, with ads for contemporary clubs, bars, restaurants and boutiques, including one for Halston cosmetics illustrated by his partner Victor Hugo. Horizontally folded as issued. Light soiling, and edgewear. Near fine. Item #12714
