Bonjour Tristesse. [Lobby Photos]
New York: Columbia Pictures, 1958. 7 vintage lobby photos (6 color and one black-and-white, each measuring 8" x 10").
Set of seven vintage lobby photos for Otto Preminger’s adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s 1954 novel, starring Jean Seberg as the teenage protagonist. Written when Sagan was only 18, the book was a major literary success and international sensation due to Sagan’s age alongside the provocative subject matter and morally ambiguous tone. Preminger quickly secured the rights to the film, choosing Seberg for the lead, having already cast her in his controversial Saint Joan (1957). Broadly faithful to the novel, the film is set in the French Riviera and follows the spoiled Cécile as she schemes to ruin her father’s (David Niven) relationship with his new lover (Deborah Kerr), setting off a chain of events that end in tragedy. An incomplete set from the original press packet, with color photo numbers 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 present (presumably from a set of ten), and one additional photo in black-and-white. All Columbia Pictures catalog number 58/32. Light toning and edgewear. Very good. Item #12713
