Songs for ‘Drella–A Fiction. Music and Lyrics by Lou Reed and John Cale
Brooklyn: Brooklyn Academy of Music, 1989. Octavo, publisher’s stapled illustrated paper wraps.
Program for Lou Reed and John Cale’s live performance of their collaborative concept album at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in 1989. Produced as a tribute to their friend and mentor Andy Warhol, who died in 1987, the song cycle recounts events of his life alongside personal reflections by Reed and Cale. The idea for the album was conceived by the duo when they met up at Warhol’s memorial, their first reunion since they had parted ways in the twilight years of the Velvet Underground. The name "Drella," a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella, was coined for Warhol by superstar Ondine, and it represented their ambivalent feelings for and sometimes troubled relationships with the pop artist. The BAM performance at the Next Wave Festival was the album's first full live presentation, and notably included the track "A Dream." (An alternative live, audience-free performance with Reed on guitar and vocals and Cale on keyboards, viola, and vocals was filmed and directed by Ed Lachman.) With production notes and a black-and-white photo of Reed and Cale by Laura Levine. Minor toning and edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #12704
