Streetwork. 1993-1997
Salamanca: Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 1998. 1st Edition. Slim oblong folio, publisher's photo-illustrated stiff paper wraps.
First edition of American photographer Philip-Lorca diCorcia's quasi-documentary collection of street photography shot in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Paris, New York, Rome, London, Naples and Odessa. "The most consistent conclusion I have drawn in my travels is that no one really knows what’s going on – it is apathy and self-preservation which define the sociopolitical aspects of the cities and their societies... The street does not induce people to shed their self-awareness. They seem to withdraw into themselves. They become less aware of their surroundings, seemingly lost within themselves. Their image is the outward-facing front belied by the inwardly gazing eyes." With 24 color plates, an introduction by Spanish curator José Luis Brea, commentary by diCorcia, a biographical chronology and short bibliography. Text in English and Spanish. Light rubbing and edgewear to wraps. Near fine. Item #12478
