Egoïste. No. 10

Paris: Éditions Cassini, 1987. Folio, publisher's stiff photo-illustrated paper wraps, loose in signatures.

Tenth issue of the French cult fashion magazine Egoïste. This issue includes a photoshoot by Richard Avedon of Andy Warhol showing his scars from the gunshot attempt on his life and a fold-out insert of the Factory; interviews with Federico Fellini by Francoise Sagan, and Chet Baker by Philippe Adler, Sigourney Weaver (shot by Helmut Newton); a portfolio of illustrations by Karl Lagerfeld; a photo-essay by Brassaï; and notable ad campaigns for Chanel, Dior, Yohji Yamamoto, Rochas, Yves Saint Laurent, Fendi, and more. The magazine is the brainchild of Nicole Wisniak, who founded it in 1977. Egoïste has remained essentially a one-woman production that Wisniak only publishes when "it's ready"; in an interview with the Guardian she said, "It's not speaking about next week's movie or next week's book. It's about lasting. It's like a bet to see who will still be interesting in 10 years." The magazine has enjoyed such a celebrated status within its industry that fashion houses do not pay to have existing advertisements included in its pages, but pay to have Wisniak conceptualize and create in-house adverts. The ads are often narrative-driven and depict mini-vignettes, blurring the line between advertising and editorial. Loose in signatures, illustrated with black-and-white photos throughout. Some soiling and edgewear to wraps. Very good. Item #12453
